11 Oct Local Seafood Brings the Summer Vibes
Summertime is once again paying us its annual visit. Coming out of the cold winter, we find ourselves reminiscing over intimate braais spent indoors. Despite all the awesome memories made and moments that we’ve cherished, it’s about time we start the summer off with a bang. Our offering of fish and seafood products will certainly hit the spot.
We believe that South Africans and tourists should experience the flavour of our local marine life. From Yellowfin Tuna to our scrumptiously divine Yellowtail fillets and fresh Hake – there is no shortage of flavour for you to explore. Here are a few ways for you to enjoy our selection of seafood.
Yellowtail
Classified as a GREEN SPECIES by SASSI, this species of fish resides within the cold waters surrounding Cape Town.
Their classification means they are plentiful and not in danger of extinction, while simultaneously tasting incredibly good.
There are many ways you can go about preparing your Yellowtail fillets. Hardcore fish braai connoisseurs will tell you that a braai is infinitely better than a traditional grilled or pan-seared dish. However, whichever route you choose to follow – your yellowtail fish dish will be nothing short of mouth-watering.
Crank up the flavour of your yellowtail dish by accompanying it with a lemon/herb marinade, a mango salsa/curry and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris. Miss Lucy is a local wine that pairs well with most local fish!

Yellowfin tuna
Not to be confused with Yellowtail, this globally-caught species of Tuna thrives off the coast of our cool Atlantic waters. Here at Blake’s Fine Foods, sustainability plays a massive role in the sourcing of our foods. Therefore, Yellowfin is also considered a GREEN SPECIES of fish.
While Yellowtail thrives on a good searing or braai to be enjoyed, yellowfin can be lightly seared or enjoyed raw. This fish is popular amongst sushi fanatics, while a light searing with sesame seeds for added flair.
A pinot noir or white blend will accentuate the flavours of your tuna dishes – albeit seared and cooked or more on the raw side. The addition of baked sweet potatoes, greens or an avocado salad can take this tantalising dish to even greater heights.
Hake
This South African family favourite remains a staple at many a braai. Embraced and loved by inhabitants of the wild West Coast to the Cape Malay community – these fine specimens never fail to elicit a smile from those who savour them.
Hake is known for its light, pleasant flavour and outstanding balance of nutrients. When we think of hake, we typically think of crumbed and battered with a healthy serving of tartar sauce and chips to compliment it. While this certainly may be an enjoyable way of experiencing this dish, a simple flame grill with the right basting will leave your taste buds clambering for more.
Hake pairs well with steamed or grilled veggies, colour rice, potato wedges and couscous. A neutral white wine, such as a delectable Semillon, will enhance the dining experience.
Celebrating the Perfect Fish Braai
A fish braai is always something to look forward to. Slow roasting your fish over the coals after carefully rubbing it with your choice of basting is always a rewarding endeavour.
It’s not always the fish that steals the show at a fish braai. A host of wines and accompanying dishes can further amplify the flavour of the main dish – allowing your taste buds to roam while the conversation and laughs seize to slow down.
Blake’s Fine Foods is all about good food and the intimate moments shared between and during meals. Purchasing from our offering of locally sourced seafood is a no-brainer; providing locals and tourists with South African flavours and freshness that can’t be beaten.
